Fears and phobias

We are born with the fear of loud noises and the fear of falling, all other fears or phobias are learnt. A phobia is simply a fear response that harnesses our natural survival instinct. For most of us, being afraid of some things does not preserve our survival. Many people live in fear of spiders or snakes; however, in a country that does not have poisonous species, this phobic response is probably regarded as an inconvenience.

About 1 in 10 adults (according to the US National Institute of Mental Health) will experience a fear or a phobia at some time in their lives. You can be afraid of virtually anything, but common phobias typically involve the environment, specific situations and animals.

Common symptoms associated with phobias include dizziness, nausea and breathlessness that can escalate to panic attacks.

The top 10 most feared things are:

  • spiders (affecting women more than men)
  • snakes (based on cultural influences; personal experience or evolutionary causes)
  • crowded spaces or places where escape is difficult (affects a third of people with panic disorders)
  • dogs (usually associated with personal experiences)
  • thunder and lightening
  • injections and needles
  • social situations
  • flying
  • germs and dirt (and may be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder)

Fortunately, hypnotherapy can provide an extremely effective solution for phobia sufferers. Simply providing you with the ability to experience deep relaxation your mind will experience a different way of responding to the feared situation or object.

Anyone suffering from a fear or phobia knows how incredibly debilitating it is. It can prevent you from taking part in many activities. However, you can regain control and put your fears behind you. People can successfully overcome debilitating fears and phobias, including fear of:

  • being a passenger in a car
  • birds or feathers
  • blood
  • butterflies and moths
  • crossing a bridge or expanses of water
  • crowds
  • dentists
  • dogs
  • driving a car
  • enclosed spaces
  • exams
  • flying
  • height
  • hospitals
  • knives
  • lifts and escalators
  • needles or hypodermic syringes
  • open spaces
  • reptiles (lizards, crocodiles and snakes)
  • amphibians (frogs and toads)
  • roller coasters
  • spiders (or crawling insects)
  • string
  • the dark
  • vomiting

Fears and phobias usually respond extremely well to hypnotherapy treatment, often being resolved in typically between one and three sessions.

For more deep-seated phobias and fears that appear to have no logical or rational reason or historical cause may have arisen in a past life, and can usually successfully be resolved with Past Life Regression Therapy.

Hypnotherapy for fears and phobia treatment is not designed to replace conventional medical health care. You must continue with your agreed medical treatment, and comply with advice from your specialist or general practitioner, and advise them of your desire to undertake hypnotherapy and follow the medical advice given by your healthcare provider during any hypnotherapy treatment.

Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy that can be used to assist in a range of health issues.
